Structured light

Structured light is the process of getting information about a surface. It can either be depth information or other surface properties. Structured light is used by a specifically designed light pattern (e.g. an array of stripes) that is projected onto a surface. The reflection from the surface distorts the designed pattern and from the distortion it is possible to extract information about the surface.

We offer different processes of structured light. We can design DOEs or MLAs that transform the transmitted light to the required projection pattern, according to the customer’s specifications. The customer can also propose their own design.

We can supply quick prototyping and manufacturing of both the transmitting optics and the receiver lens. The receiver lenses are typically made of a stack of several refractive lenses. We can provide novel solutions by DOE or other methodologies.

Use of Structured Light

Structured light can be used to map 3D surfaces either in a depth camera or a LiDAR. LiDAR is short for Light Detection and Ranging. This is a method for measuring distances to objects in the surrounding area, by sending out a pulsed laser. The laser source illuminates the object from a distance and a sensor measures the reflected pulses of light. By detecting small differences in the time it takes for the pulse to return, it is possible to calculate the distance to the object and make a full 3D map of the surrounding. There are two different types of LiDAR, one that is scanning the environment and one that captures the entire scene with each laser pulse.

There are multiple LiDAR applications, but autonomous driving is perhaps the most commonly used.
